Cellular operator(s) to remove ability to save photos to handset's memory card?

Reiter links to a blogger working for RocketMobile who mentions that Reiter'sCellular operator(s) have asked them to remove the ability to save photos to handset's memory cards. Rocket Mobile develops apps for BREW based phones. Reiter points to the few carriers who do provide BREW on their phones - at least is narrows down the guessing game.

Mobile Infotainment ? - Study

Smart Mobs links to a set of surveys on user responses in the US and Japane with respect to mobile infotainment.

Very interesting that one day after the release of a study indicating US users don’t want infotainment content on mobile phones another similar survey, this time with Japanese users, brings a total opposite result:

In response to a question regarding "functions desirable for future mobile phones" (multiple answers allowed), "TV" (43%), "dictionaries" (35%) and "keys" (29%) were the top three. Functions such as "electronic wallet" (25%) and "TV phone" (24%), which are expected to be integrated in the next-generation mobile phones, did not attract many supporters. In addition, 16% responded "nothing in particular" and did not request any additional functions.

Wavemarket launches location based blogging

Wavemarket announces their location based blogging platform:

WaveIQ consists of three software products, all now available:

• WaveSpotter—a cellular map interface that allows users move about, letting users drill down to street level and post or consume blogs.

WaveBlog—a company-hosted super blog serving as a multiple channel informational clearinghouse engineered by uber blogger Russell Beattie, WaveMarket director of blog engineering.

• WaveAlert—wireless operator infrastructure that allows users to be notified whenever they enter or leave a designated area. The server software powers a scalable system that reduces network loads and hardware requirements.

Russel Beattie has more on it on his blog. I always had a feeling that this was the reason WaveMarket had hired him. Their presentation is available here.

Blogging from Demo

Jeff Nolan blogs from Demo conference. The official Demo blog is accessible here.

Things that caught my attention are:

Waveblog:
- location-based blogging. Pretty fringe technology that is intellectually appealing, but IMO far too cumbersome to use to be mainstream. I just don't think people are wired to work in this fashion.

Moblogging from the Nokia 6600 with Atom API

Joi Ito has a screenshot of the Moblogging client on the Nokia 6600 with Atom API support. It lets you post photos to any Atom API compliant photo album directly from the phone without going through email.

I guess Joi got the screenshot from Christian Lindlum's blog. Christian mentions that the solution was developed bu Futurice (see my earlier posting). According to Christian:
"I met the guys in January and they showed me their solution and it looked interesting, except it was a closed environment. I had just decided I wanted to blog to via TypePad. I gave them an openess challenge to see how quickly they could integrate the Atom API into their application and they did it in about 3 weeks. I was impressed"

More notes on Christian's presentation at ETech'04 from Matt Croydon

Talk by Nokia CTO, Pertti Korhonen at OReilley Emerging Technologies Conference

Howard Rheingold has some notes from Nokia's CTO's talk at the O'Reilley Emerging Technologies Conference. Nokia seems to have a vision of using the mobile device as a bridge between the physical world and the virtual world.

More notes from Joho the Blog
More notes from MobileWhack
Also see Ross Mayfield's Wiki on notes from the conference

Points of note: "Modish", an application in development.

"Searching and sharing content, P2P on devices,
both over the network and locally. App that
works both with GPRS and Bluetooth. Capture your
content and share that with your peers. Publish
content and invite other peers to join in." [from MobiWhack]

Photoblogs using AtomAPI mentioned. Update: See this entry

Matt Croydon mentions this:
"Christian Lindholm at Nokia took the wraps off of a life recording application that spans the mobile phone, personal computer, and the web. The project is still in the concept phase, but looks quite promising. Experiences (text, pictures, audio, or video) can be taken on your mobile phone and synchronized and archived with your personal computer. You can then sync and share certain information with everyone on the web."

See Matt's notes here.

Futurice: PhotoBlog

Futurice seems to have a relationship with Nokia - I am not sure what the relationship is besides Nokia mentioning them in the Nokia Forum. Futurice's solutions include Image-Galleries and PhotoBlogs.

Futurice also mentions a cooperative effort between them an UC Berkley's SIMS. Link

Undercover - Location based SMS game

Undercover [via SmartMobs] is a game from YDreams and Hong Kong mobile telecom operator, Sunday, that uses the user's location as tool to walk them through the real world to 'identify and destroy' threats to global peace. An interesting game. I love the UIs in the Java version - the game seems immersive enough to keep one's mind of the fact that they are spending 10cents each for each action they take (since every action involves sending an SMS) :-)

Motility has an ATOM feed !

Motility now has an ATOM feed: http://motility.blogspot.com/atom.xml
This is a blogger.com feature and so it works a lot better than the RSS feed I have courtesy blogstreet.com. At least the blogstreet feed worked a lot better than the feed I tried setting up via feedster.

Nokia's Xpress-on GPS shell

Nokia's - Xpress-on GPS Shell allows Nokia phones to be GPS enabled. I haven't been able to identify how the device fits on, but knowing how Nokia phones can be pulled apart and 'new shells' placed on them, I guess the GPS shell works the same way. The flash demo on the Nokia site shows a description of how the GPS feature could be used. I am not sure if the apps shown in the demo are standard - such as the hiking app or store finder, but they've made the whole location based services functionality via GPS look quite simple. I am also interested in the WayPoint feature that allows you to make notes about a place of interest and send it to your friends.

mobs video ::"free mobile video sent to your phone!"

SmartMobs has a pointer to mobs video - a service aimed to deliver "free mobile video sent to your phone". Although the article pointed to from SmartMobs mentions that they would like to make it a pay-per download medium.

Nokia brings pictures to FM radio

BBC reports that Nokia released a Visual Radio service that allows users of Nokia phones (currently the 7700) to receive FM radio stations as well as get info on the contents of the stations - such as images of the band currently playing on the airwaves. This might be Nokia's shot at SPOT technology and might be a move into the niche that Microsoft has been trying to carve out for itself. I'm interested in seeing the uptake.....

Camera Phones a contriversial trend

VOANews.com [via Picturephoning.com]has a good article on Camera phones and privacy issues arising from them.

World-Wide Media eXchange: WWMX

World-Wide Media eXchange: WWMX's site starts off with this quote:

"What can you do with a gazillion photos on a single database indexed by their location?

Browse photos by location. Add your own photos to the database. See who else has been where you've been"

I tried accessing the demo on the site, but thanks to the SlashDot effect, the server seems to have been overloaded. More on this later once I can get through to the server.

Japan Media Review -- Keitai Log

Japan Media Review's -- Keitai Log is an interesting resource by Japanese college students on the mobile Internet.

Mizuko Ito - Anthropologist working on CameraPhone user behaviour

Mizuko Ito is a cultural anthropologist studying media technology use, particularly how digital media are changing relationships, identities, and communities. Her research groups at the Docomo House at Keio University Shonan Fujisawa Campus seems to have some useful material - but its all in Japanese !!! :-(

Incidentally, I've read somewhere that Mizuko is Japanese enterpreneur, Joi Ito's sister.

SENT - Exhibition on Cameraphone art

SENT is a new exhibition claimed to be the first cameraphone art show in the United States. It 'aims to explore the creative potential of the limited camera hardware available on modern mobile phones and to capture the beauty of the mundane, while questioning the boundaries of modern photography' [link]

SENT will be one of the first curated shows to include not just artists, but digerati, and even everyday folks who can enter through a contest sponsored by NPR. Quting an article in the Feature: "Previously a group of photographers called Bromkameratene organized a show in Norway of 80 pictures taken with Nokia 7650s. InfoSync quotes one of theparticipants as saying "these cameras remind us that quality photos are not about electronics and post-processing, but rather about simple motives, being present and having fun with photos.""

Buzznet - Photologs and MoBlogs

Buzznet - Photologs and MoBlogs seems to be another photoblogging hosting service. One thing I notice differnent here is the idea of 'communities' or broad themes under which people can make postings. I wonder how many people have signed up fo rhtis service. The SFGate.com has an article about them here.
